What’s New on the Farm

Even when the ground is frozen and snow-covered, plans are moving forward to get ready for the arrival of The Ladies of Lilac Lane. For the past couple of weeks, lumberjacks have been busy sawing down some trees. (Check out the size of the saws they used!) These trees, though old and stately, have become fragile to the point of posing damage risk to the house, garage, fence, and power lines. The crew was able to take care of some things in one or two weeks, which would have taken us years. Though it was sad to say goodbye to the trees, it has opened up sight lines around the property. Inspecting a couple of trees once they were chopped down, it was clear that there was an imminent threat to infrastructure. This was confirmation that we had made the right decision.

Follow-up work will include yard cleanup and reconstruction. But first, we wait for the snow to melt!

Other things we are looking forward to this spring (besides warmer temperatures):

• Fencing upgrades to our pasture fence.
• The arrival of ten new chicks. Nine of the chicks are part of our Chick Sponsorship Program. One chick is a community chick. We will raise this chick as one of our Happy Hens, but whatever she produces will be donated to the community. We are super excited about the opportunity to help others. We see this as part of our stewardship opportunity and an avenue to share some joy from Lilac Lane Alpaca Homestead and the Happy Hens of Lilac Lane.
