The farm is a hive of activity as we prepare for the arrival of our first five alpacas. The stalls have been cleaned, new barn doors installed, electrical service upgraded, and some old hollow trees removed. We are awaiting some fencing improvements that will take place once the weather turns mild. Our anticipation grows daily!
Gertie, Wilhelmina Ida Ann, Duchess, and two other ladies will join Lilac Lane Alpaca Homestead this spring. This is truly a dream come true! We are eager to receive pregnancy test results soon and will keep you updated on their future crias as we learn more.
Once the ladies arrive, we will work closely with them to ensure their transition is as stress-free as possible. Bonding and socialization are equally important to us. Shortly after their arrival, they will have their annual shearing. We cannot wait to see their joyful pronking, happy hopping, relaxing splooting, and hear the symphony of their humming. Once the ladies are settled into their new homes, we will announce some events to celebrate them.
Let the humming commence!
Gertie will be the matron of our herd, our oldest alpaca. We have named her after Nancy’s grandma, Gertrude Grasman. Grandma Gert and Gertie share many of the same traits, including being great mothers. We are hopeful that Gertie will pass on her gentle mothering instincts to our younger girls.
Gertie (Lostatsea, ARI# 32106305) was sired by PC Running Late 557 (appropriate since Nancy’s middle name is “Running Late”). She was born on 04/21/2010 to MFI Peruvian Leeward. Running Late is the offspring of a mother and father from Peru. Gertie’s grandfather was also from a Peruvian bloodline.
We are super excited to welcome Gertie to Lilac Lane Alpaca Homestead. She is a beautiful medium-fawn lady. She has given birth to two show-quality crias, and we are looking forward to another.
When Simona saw Wilhelmina Ida Ann, it was love at first sight. Wilhelmina is the second-oldest alpaca in our herd. Simona named her after her grandmother, Nancy’s mom, Wilma. It was always Simona’s intent to name an alpaca after Grandma, and she did not disappoint. Our friend Deb pointed out that Wilhelmina Ida Ann had a nice ring, and the name stuck.
Wilhelmina (SSky Ida Ann, ARI# 32772791) was sired by Snowmass Royal Brown (both parents Peruvian) and birthed by CQA Isabelle (both parents Canadian—Go Canada!). She was born on 05/24/2012 and is a beautiful white alpaca.
Wilhelmina has a crooked smile. A number of years back, she had an impacted tooth, and in taking care of it, there was some damage to her mouth. Her demeanor, her fiber, and her smile, though a bit catawampus, have endeared her to us.
Wilhelmina will be a precious addition to our herd.
Alpaca fiber, in the past, was reserved for royalty. We believe these adorable creatures continue to be royal, regal creatures. So, it is no surprise that one of our first alpacas was given the name Dazzel. She is dazzling in demeanor
Dazzel (3DR Black Irish Texas Dazzel, ARI# 35492658) is slightly over three years old. She was born on 08/27/2019. Dazzel's sire was Black Irish Texas. Both his parents were USA held and bred. Her dam is Patagonia’s Pascula. Though Dazzel's mother is also USA born and bred, if you trace her bloodline back a couple of generations, you will find a Chilean bloodline. While we appreciate alpacas from Peruvian bloodlines, it is fun to know that Dazzel comes from ancestors in Chili.
Dazzel is a beautiful light fawn color, and her fiber has a beautiful crimp. She is so far unproven as a mother, but we anticipate that changing quite soon!
Everyone was surprised at the birth of our KB! No one expected KB to be true black! This beautiful five-year-old is officially named Kan’t Believe I am Black (ARI #35224198). This beautiful black alpaca was born on 04/20/2017. Her sire is Interceptor; her dam is K-ran Kountry Kreek. Both her parents have a USA heritage. If her lineage is traced further back, one finds Peruvian and Chilean bloodlines mingled together.
She has not yet had a cria, but we are eager to see her future offspring. Will they be black, or will there be surprises in store for us? KB has shown us to be somewhat hormonal. She never misses an opportunity to target us with several full-force spits during herd health activities. This gives us great hope for the birth of a spunky cria in the spring of 2024.
Twinkle (ARI# 35492740) is the baby of the bunch! Born on 07/20/2020, she will be turning three this summer. Unfortunately, we do not have much information about her pedigree, but we know she is a beautiful white color. There is something appealing about white alpacas, and Twinkle certainly fills the bill in that department! Hopefully, future breedings will continue to produce some sparkling white crias.
Twinkle arrived at Lilac Lane Alpaca Homestead pregnant and due in mid-October. When we arrived home on September 14, we were surprised to find her in labor. Eventually she gave birth to a beautiful white cria who we named Comet. While comet seemed healthy, he was a bit slow to rise to his feet and nurse. Eventually he developed a severe infection in one of his hind legs. We consulted with vets and two veterinary hospitals. We made every effort to both treat him and provide a good life for him. This experience brought us through a gamut of emotions. Our care protocols bond us quickly and closely with our alpacas. Comet was no different. We had to bravely face a difficult situation and continue forward, even when we were grieving.
On a positive note, Twinkle was a most amazing mother. We bonded a bit more closely with her through this experience, and she has become even more of a joy on our farm. We are carefully monitoring her and hope to rebreed her in the spring of 2024.
